Four schools in the Cayman Islands will soon be taking part in a pilot project to introduce climate-change education to their curricula. Recently a high-level Expertise France and RESEMBID delegation visited two of Anguilla’s famous marine parks which will be part of the EUR587,024 RESEMBID project: “Transforming Anguilla’s Marine Parks: Institutionalising Sustainable and Collaborative Management Solutions” which will be implemented over 16 months by the Anguilla National Trust in partnership with the Department of Natural Resources Fisheries and Marine Resources Unit and Blue Finance. Jérémie Pellet, Director-General of Expertise France wrapped up his hectic day trip to Anguilla on Wednesday 22nd February with an exciting boat tour of two of Anguilla’s seven Marine Parks – Little Bay and Sandy Island - which were established to conserve ecologically important areas around the island. Little Bay houses extensive seagrass beds, and Sandy Island possesses valuable coral reef ecosystems. Here, Pellet listens attentively as Clarissa Lloyd, Terrestrial and Wetlands Conservation Officer of the Anguilla National Trust, explains the delicate nature of the Marine Parks.
Director-General of Expertise France, Jérémie Pellet was in St. Maarten and Anguilla this week on a RESEMBID briefing mission mission to gain deeper insight into the programme and the projects it supports. On Tuesday 21st February, he met with Prime Minister of St. Maarten, Silveria Jacobs and heard about the impact of RESEMBID’s projects on the country and people. He and the RESEMBID team were also on hand to join the launch of Plastic Free SXM - a landmark national project aimed at eliminating single use plastic usage on the St Maarten!

Recently apopointed Ambassador René van Nes, Head of Delegation, Delegation of the European Union has given high marks to the RESEMBID Programme and its projects in the OCTs. Ambassador van Nes was accompanied by Layla El Khadraoui, EU Commission Programme and Policy Manager, who both recently met with RESEMBID team members in St Maarten, visited ongoing projects and were briefed on the work being implemented specifically in Aruba, Bonaire, Curaçao, Saba, St. Barthelemy, St. Eustatius and St. Maarten. Travelling Post-COVID-19 can still be a challenging experience. This is another RESEMBID regional project that will work with four Caribbean islands to build resilience and response to the national visitor management systems in Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao , St Maarten. This will include a Best Practice Guide for Tourism Stakeholders in Contagion Scenarios as well as capacity building for key supporting persons in the tourism sector of the participating Overseas Caribbean Territories (OCTs). Reef Managers in the Caribbean will have a chance to explore tangible coral reef adaptation methods to preserve corals based on the research being done by the CCMI. Expert staff at the CCMI will be doing research on increasing coral reef resilience through selective restoration using stress tolerant corals. Follow them on social media when they go LIVE under water to speak of their findings from this research that will also be shared regionally!
This project supports the University College of the Cayman Islands (UCCI) in their recovery of post-COVID19 Cayman islands through the upskilling and retool of underemployed or unemployed Caymanians for alternative employment opportunities in-line with government revitilisation priorities. Fifty-five Caymanians will participate in a multi-pronged 16-month training programme which is informed by a Workforce Needs Assessment undertaken in partnership with the Cayman government and private sector. Areas include Sustainable Construction, ICT, Tourism Management and Solar PV installation.
Having the systems in place to cope with and bounce back from a pandemic such as COVID-19 is critical to all countries, particularly small islands states. The Central Caribbean Marine Institute (CCMI) in the Cayman Islands will be able to put in stronger systems to manage the impacts of COVID-19 while doing its vital work on coral reef resilience. A part of that system will be improving safeguards and hygiene, protocols and emergency management for staff, students as well as local and international visitors to the facility.
