Mission of Jérémie Pellet Director-General, Expertise France to RESEMBID

Director-General of Expertise France, Jérémie Pellet was in St. Maarten and Anguilla this week on a RESEMBID briefing mission mission to gain deeper insight into the programme and the projects it supports. On Tuesday 21st February, he met with Prime Minister of St. Maarten, Silveria Jacobs and heard about the impact of  RESEMBID’s projects on the country and people. He and the RESEMBID team were also on hand to join the launch of Plastic Free SXM - a landmark national project aimed at eliminating single use plastic usage on the St Maarten!

Recently apopointed Ambassador René van Nes, Head of Delegation, Delegation of the European Union has given high marks to the RESEMBID Programme and its projects in the OCTs. Ambassador van Nes was accompanied by Layla El Khadraoui, EU Commission Programme and Policy Manager, who both recently met with RESEMBID team members in St Maarten, visited ongoing projects and were briefed on the work being implemented specifically in Aruba, Bonaire, Curaçao, Saba, St. Barthelemy, St. Eustatius and St. Maarten. Our Pandemic response for 12 OCTs

In response to the global pandemic and the far-reaching implications for the small open economies of the OCTs, the RESEMBID team spontaneously created the Pandemic Resilience Response Facility. It was successfully launched on 5th April 2020. In record time, the Facility earmarked flexibly €10 million specifically to fund pandemic Resilience response actions for all the 12 OCTs. It was structured as a purpose-designed, fast-track, flexible response tool for the OCTs to confront the challenges of responding to the pandemic. RESEMBID Visual Brand (Color Story)

The RESEMBID visual identity is expressed in four distinct colors which were chosen to complement the personality, corporate culture and aims of the programme and to help the programme tell its brand story as a dynamic, energetic and impactful way. The four colors are applied across the two main elements of the brand’s logo: Element 1: The brand wordmark (RESEMBID acronym) Element 2: The stylized globe represented as 12 interlocking, curved lines in three color groups. How do we support Marine Biodiversity ? Marine ecosystems provide critical services to the people of the OCTs. Without adequate protection, conservation, restoration, and sustainable management of marine ecosystems, these services will no longer be able to withstand the increasing pressures from climate change and growing demands on marine resources from increasing populations and tourists visiting the islands. Sustainable energy is the key!

How do we support sustainable Energy? Though many Caribbean OCTs have made significant strides in reducing their fossil fuel dependency, energy rates remain high in the region. RESEMBID seeks to support their thrust to deliver resilient energy services to their respective local populations – which means : • increased capacity and competency of the people of the OCTs to utilize and maintain innovative technologies • contributing to low carbon development locally and regionally. Why Resilience ?

Why resilience ?   The Caribbean region is subject to recurrent natural disasters, such as hurricanes, floods, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, landslides, and droughts – made worse climate change combined with vulnerable economies. The capacity to cope with these extreme events is limited for most OCTs so there is a need to: • reduce structural vulnerability • increase the resilience of economic infrastructure and fragile coastal ecosystems to extreme recurrent natural events. Support to resilience at all levels is also an integral part of the new 2017 European Consensus on Development.
