Did you know that different parts of the same island can have completely different types of plastic trash?

In Curaçao, the RESEMBID – funded project carried out by Green Phenix is aimed at reducing the amount of plastic pollution that ends up in the marine environment.

The data collected with the Litterati app showed significant differences between the Leeward and the Windward side beaches of the island. On the Leeward side, most items were left by consumers on Curacao, such as bottles, cigarette butts and bottle caps. On the Windward side, there was an accumulation of litter that is from other places as well as ocean activities. Here, besides bottles and bottle caps, many plastic fragments were found.

Anguilla launches food security project under Resilience portfolio

Today we congratulate Anguilla in launching one of their projects under RESEMBID’s Marine Resilience portfolio, “Piloting Backyard Recirculating Aquaponics Systems in Anguilla”.

This project addresses the need for Anguilla to transform the fisheries and agriculture sectors; reduce dependence on imports; strengthen food safety and security and support healthier, well-balanced diets.

Beneficiaries of the project will be able to produce high quality fish and fresh produce to feed themselves, or create a new revenue stream.

Climate change education to be introduced to 4 schools in the Cayman Islands

Four schools in the Cayman Islands will soon be taking part in a pilot project to introduce climate-change education to their curricula.

The National Trust for the Cayman Islands will lead this important project with the help of a €163,223 RESEMBID grant.

Travelling Post-COVID-19 can still be a challenging experience. This is another RESEMBID regional project that will work with four Caribbean islands to build resilience and response to the national visitor management systems in Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao , St Maarten.
This will include a Best Practice Guide for Tourism Stakeholders in Contagion Scenarios as well as capacity building for key supporting persons in the tourism sector of the participating Overseas Caribbean Territories (OCTs).
This project will allow enable the safest way for tourism to continue on these beautiful islands!

Students, teachers and others in Anguilla’s education system will be able to bounce back more quickly from adverse circumstances such as pandemics and hurricanes thanks to this project. This 15-month project will introduce an Education Management and Information system that strengthens coordination in Anguilla’s education system and ensures learning continues despite physical disruptions.

Why resilience ?

The Caribbean region is subject to recurrent natural disasters, such as hurricanes, floods, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, landslides, and droughts – made worse climate change combined with vulnerable economies.

The capacity to cope with these extreme events is limited for most OCTs so there is a need to:

• reduce structural vulnerability

• increase the resilience of economic infrastructure and fragile coastal ecosystems to extreme recurrent natural events.

Support to resilience at all levels is also an integral part of the new 2017 European Consensus on Development.
